Like many doulas, my interest in doula work began after the birth of my daughter. When I was still in the vulnerable postpartum recovery weeks, feeling anxious and unsure of myself (and extremely sleep deprived), I turned to a postpartum doula for extra support. Her kindness and help made a profound impact in just a few meetings, both in my short-term recovery and adjustment, as well as in the long-term and how I think about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery.
Historically, women have given birth and cared for newborns surrounded by the nurturing, support, knowledge, and experience of other women. But increasingly this is not the experience for most mothers. A contributing factor to this trend is that many of us do not live near our closest family and friends and do not have their built-in, in-person support. Even if you do live near loved ones, there are often gaps in the amount or type of support they are able to give you. This is where a doula comes in and is uniquely trained to provide the invaluable service of personalized in-home care involving emotional support, physical support, education, and resources for new mothers and their families. This is the heart of what I can offer my clients.
Before becoming a doula, I worked as a Marriage & Family Therapist (AMFT – CA). I believe this background in mental health informs and strengthens the emotional support and family support aspects of my doula work, but please note that I am not a practicing therapist in Virginia and services provided will be limited to the care and support role of a doula. My other credentials include an M.S. in Psychology, B.S. in Psychology, B.S. in Sociology, Postpartum Doula Training with DONA International, Birth Doula Training with DONA International, and Adult, Child, and Infant First AID/CPR/AED certification. The services I offer are designed primarily for antepartum (before birth) and postpartum (after birth) care and support. I currently have limited availability for birth support, but I am happy to discuss options.
Please reach out to schedule a free consultation (phone, video call, or in-person). I am looking forward to the opportunity to speak with you and further discuss your specific needs and goals, as well as answer any questions you may have.
